Introduction to Human resource management
Definition:
Human resource management (HRM) is a strategic, integrated and coherent approach to the employment, development, and well-being of the people working in organizations (Armstrong, 2011).
Human resource management involves all management decisions and activities that affect the nature of the relationship between the organization and its employees – its human resources. (Beer et al, 1984)
HRM comprises a set of policies designed to maximize organizational integration, employee commitment, flexibility and quality of work. (Guest, 1987)
The objectives of HRM
The overall purpose of human resource management is to ensure that the organization is able to achieve success through people. HRM aims to increase organizational effectiveness and capability – the capacity of an organization to achieve its goals by making the best use of the resources available to it.
Ulrich and Lake (1990) remarked that: ‘HRM systems can be the source of organizational capabilities that allow firms to learn and capitalize on new opportunities.' But HRM has an ethical dimension which means that it must also be concerned with the rights and needs of people in organizations through the exercise of social responsibility.
Global challenges identified in modern human resource management literature.
The challenges include skills shortages, talent management, shifting demographics, work/life balance, and managing intergenerational and intercultural work groups. Approaches to these challenges are discussed as reported in the literature of human resource management, library management, and information technology (Munde, 2010).
The success of a multinational company depends on international human resource management. Human resources managers are kind of people managers of any business organization and are responsible for managing a wide range of employees. The human resource manager in a multi-national company with divisions or subsidiaries in foreign countries has all the normal HR responsibilities plus a brace of additional tasks that are specific to offshore operations of his department (Munde, 2010).
Rapidly change in information technology is the key challenge, when managing a wide range of employees in a modern organization.
